The city of Oshawa is the most densely populated (pop. 150,000) municipality in Durham Region. Known for over a century for its automobile industry, especially General Motors, Oshawa now boasts a focus on education and health care, with several post-secondary institutions. Six out of ten of Durham Region’s biggest employers are located in the City of Oshawa. Evidence of Oshawa’s automotive heritage can be seen in the Canadian Automotive Museum and General Motors Centre arena, home to the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League. The Oshawa General Hospital, now known as Lakeridge Health Oshawa, is the largest in Durham Region.

Because of its size, Oshawa is policed by two divisions of the Durham Regional Police Service: Central West, at 480 Taunton Rd. East and Central East, at 77 Centre St. N. Most of its work consists of urban policing, investigating property crimes, bar fights, drug crimes and retail fraud. Oshawa fields over 30% of all calls for police. The headquarters of the Durham Regional Police is in Whitby, at 605 Rossland Rd. East.

The courthouse for Durham Region (which includes communities such as Oshawa, Ajax, Whitby, Pickering, Clarington, Bowmanville, Port Perry, and Uxbridge) is situated at 150 Bond St. East in Oshawa. It is a new and impressive building, housing the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice.
