Why a Privacy Policy?
Arun S. Maini, the criminal lawyer at The Defence Group, provides legal services throughout Ontario, particularly to clients within the Greater Toronto Area, such as Newmarket, Brampton, Milton, Oshawa, and Toronto. Mr. Maini provides advice to his clients at various courthouses and at our main office in downtown Toronto, and satellite meeting offices in Oakville and Vaughan (for the convenience of clients in these areas). The Defence Group is committed to maintaining the privacy of your identity and any personal information in our possession. In addition, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) require that all commercial activities, including legal services, comply with the provisions of the Act.
What Information Do We Collect?
In the course of providing criminal law services, The Defence Group receive personal information from and about you. That information can include personal identification information, such as your name, date of birth, address, and so on. We also collect information about the legal issues you have retained us to advise you about, so that we can advise and represent you, and provide you with the best defence to your criminal law case. Finally, we also collect information in the administration of our website.
How Do We Get This Information?
The Defence Group receive personal information from multiple sources and in multiple formats. We receive information directly from you, the client, by telephone, text, email, in writing, and in person. We also receive information from the government, including the police and the Crown Attorney’s Office. These agencies have an obligation to disclose all of the information within its possession that could possibly be relevant to your criminal law case. That information, which includes the evidence in your criminal law case, can be provided to us in writing, in an audio or video format, in photographs, digitally or electronically.
We also receive information from our website which allows us to better serve your needs; to optimize the presence of our criminal defence law firm on the internet; to administer the website; and to enhance the security of the information in our possession. We employ statistical programs such as Google Analytics, to analyze the user traffic on our website, but we ensure that no personally identifiable information is used in these activities.
Do We Share This Information with Third Parties?
If any of your private information needs to be shared with an outside party, we made it our practice to obtain your consent first. Sometimes that consent is implied from the nature of our legal services, such as in the course of building your criminal law defence; or in conducting discussions with the Crown Attorney’s Office. On rare occasions, such as the service of a subpoena, information is required to be disclosed by law; in such a circumstance, we would of course inform you of this.
We do not provide client lists or personal client information to anyone who seeks to market their products or services to you.
Is My Information Secure?
The Defence Group employs security systems to protect its information. Those systems include the protection of our physical space, such as our main office in Toronto and satellite meeting offices in Oakville and Vaughan; our storage facilities; and our online presence, through online security systems, password protection, firewalls, and secure servers. While we take appropriate precautions to ensure the security of our clients’ information, we cannot guarantee that our information will always be 100% secure from unauthorized access.
